Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. Controversy over the use of the English language for worship led to the formation of the English Lutheran Synod of Ohio in 1836 within the boundaries of the Joint Synod of Ohio. By 1840, some members declared their independence from the Joint Synod. Those who remained in the synod reorganized and met in 1841 as the sixth convention of the English Synod of Ohio.
